Volunteer for the Children's Ministry

Dear Bethel Parents,

We are happy to "Bee" starting off strong start in our Children's Worship ministry! We have about 34 on our attendance roster but not everyone is registered! So please make sure you stop by the registration table on Sunday and complete all forms so you children can continue to participate. Also we have attached the forms to this email.

This year's theme BEATITUDES: Me Attitudes vs "Bee" Attitudes, focuses on raising children's awareness of their own attitudes and how they impact others, and empowering children to make God-centered choices in their everyday interactions.

We are in need of parent volunteers and are asking parents to volunteer at least once every other month.
At this time we would like to send a shout out to the parents who have helped us so far!
  • Abedilla "Abby" Campbell (Katyra's grandmother) - registration
  • Alkia Powell - (Zoe's mother) - snack and pictures
  • Rayna & Omar Simmons (Caden & Cole's parents) - snack
Below are ways in which you can sign up to volunteer:

ASSISTANT TEACHER (1 person per Sunday) Come help our lead teacher as she/he teaches Sunday's lesson and help the kids stay on track in their Sunday routine (i.e. The Lord's Prayer, taking restroom breaks, listening/discussing the lesson, snack, offering, closing prayer, song rehearsal etc.). Time commitment is for the entire 9:30 am service. Must complete a CORI/SORI background check before serving in this capacity.

GUEST READER - (1 person a Sunday) - Come read Sunday's story from the Children's Bible or other biblically based picture book. Once the story is read and discussed feel free to stay for the lesson following the reading of the story or return to main sanctuary worship service. Time commitment approximately 15 minutes.

REGISTRATION - (2 people a Sunday) - Help greet new parents and get them and all parentsregistered and informed about Children's Church. This involves keeping track of received registration forms, parent covenant, parent contact information and etc. on our database. Also help keep the traffic in and out of the class room to a minimum. Time commitment is for the entire service.

ROOM HELPER - (1-2 people a Sunday) - Help our teaching staff with their Sunday routine (i.e. sit with the children as they listen to the lesson, enthusiastically participate in praise and worship, setting up snack and activities, joining in opening and closing prayer, make copies as needed, etc.). Time commitment is for the entire 9:30 am service. Must complete a CORI/SORI background check before serving in this capacity.

MORNING FELLOWSHIP ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - (1-2 people a Sunday)
Share your talents with Bethel’s children. Lead a 15 minute creative activity during the children’s fellowship hour. Teach a song or dance. Make balloon animals. Let them try on your uniform. Make a no-cook snack. Build a mini-experiment. Bring in a show and tell object or picture. Show us your gifts and talents. Time commitment involves pre-planning, pre-approval of activity by the lead teacher, and set up and clean up after the activity on that Sunday.

SNACK - (1-2 people per Sunday) - Bring food for about 30 kids from our list of pre-approved snacks (due to allergies, we are nut free). If food for 30 does not fit within you budget feel free to split it with another parent. Non-perishable snacks may be donated in advance. We no long serve juice but serve water. Time commitment involves checking in with us about appropriate foods and making sure food get delivered/dropped off to us.

PICTURE/VIDEO DOCUMENTATION - (1 person a month) - Come take pictures or videotape the children during their Sunday routine and/or on Youth Impact Sunday when they sing and minister to the entire congregation. Time commitment is flexible and also includes posting of pictures and videos on our blog.

You sign up online at VolunteerSpot.com and easily keep track of your monthly volunteer shifts.

Thanks for helping us serve your children!

Communion Sunday Logistics

www.reverendfun.com

Hi Parents,

This Sunday, November 6, 2011, is Communion Sunday (first Sunday).

This month we will begin teaching children about Communion, and involving them in the main sanctuary's Communion Service.

The plan for Communion Sundays and the Children's Ministry:
  • Drop off children to the Fellowship Hall at 9:30am
  • Keep your children's belongings with you in the sanctuary (this includes ALL coats, stuffed animals, action figures, lipgloss and purses)
  • Children will read THE LAST SUPPER and THE FIRST CHURCH and have a discussion (with a member of the Ministerial Staff) about the stories, and learn basic concepts of communion and its role in building our church community
  • ACTIVITY TIME will be a mock serving of communion (empty cups and animal crackers)
  • Snack (if time runs out, they will receive snack to go, as usual, in a ziplock bag for later)
  • Children will be brought into the sanctuary at offering, seated in reserved seats
  • When YOU get up to give YOUR offering, continue to the section where the children are seated and PICK UP YOUR CHILD and take him/her back to your seating area
  • Partake in communion, as a family. Ministerial staff will look to you as a parent to give them a nod to serve your child communion (otherwise they will give your child a blessing as they continue around the circle serving the congregation)
  • At the benediction, you and your children are free to go home or participate in the church's coffee hour in the sanctuary
We will repeat this same plan every First Sunday.

Be blessed,

~ Simone

PS A few of our worship leaders (our six and seven year olds) will be pre-selected to help with communion in the sanctuary (they'll be collecting cups for the Stewardesses). We will rotate these 4 positions throughout the year.

Rehearsing for Youth Impact Sunday

Rehearsing on stage in preparation for next week's Youth Impact Sunday (Oct 30, 9:30am)
Beatitudes: ME Attitudes vs BEE Attitudes

Demonstrating ME attitudes

Dropping our ME attitudes and putting on our BEE Attitudes

Living our Beatitudes
-- serious focus, standing in a straight line (shoulder to shoulder), eyes on Miss Jessica, and prepared to work

Because who are we? I'm a Bethelite, of Bethel AME, I go to church to learn about the God in me...
and because Jesus Loves Me, This I Know...

Next Sunday, October 30, there is NO CHILDREN'S WORSHIP because it's YOUTH IMPACT SUNDAY (youth led worship at Bethel...ALL kids in the sanctuary).

Please bring your children to the Fellowship Hall DURING Altar Call (immediately after the sermon ends) for a brief rehearsal. King's Kidz sing just before offering. After they sing, children immediately return to their parents.

KIDS SHOULD WEAR BLACK, YELLOW OR WHITE (Bee colors). They can wear the colors any combination i.e. a yellow dress or black dress, yellow tie, yellow shoes or accessories (just like the Bethel's Praise Team does on Sunday mornings).

Just before going on stage, the children will be given sunglasses and bee antennae headbands to wear (which must be returned).

Practice at home:
  • The Bethel Chant and Jesus Loves Me
  • Say the word ME (kids put on sunglasses and act inappropriately for singing in church)
  • Say the word BEE (kids immediately take off glasses, arms at their sides, and are focused ready to sing)
  • Reminder: it doesn't matter what color sunglasses they get on stage...it's not about them, it's about God!
  • Reminder: It doesn't matter who is in front of the microphone, or who stands in front or in back, it's about God!
  • Parental reminder: at their developmental stages, we don't aim for perfection on stage as it's not a show performance, it's education and ministry. King's Kidz experiences help the children to see themselves as contributing parts of the Bethel community while stimulating parts of their brains that control things like emotional control, memorization, motor functions, elocution, etc. Kids forget lyrics. They wiggle. They cry. They stand still (and nothing else). They follow directions. They sing. Standing before a congregation of a few hundred people is a learning process. We aim for progress, not perfection.
On Sunday
  • Dress your children in BLACK, YELLOW OR WHITE (Bee colors)
  • Bring your child to the Fellowship Hall during Altar Call (immediately after the sermon) for rehearsal
  • The King's Kidz sing just before offering
  • Your children will remain with you before and after they sing
After
  • Email us your pictures and videos to post on our blog!

Elijah Helps a Widow ( Recap of Oct 23)

We read Elijah Helps a Widow and reflected on Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Teacher: "Can you tell me about a time when you were sad?"

(A three year raises her hands.)

Child: "I cry when I have to take a bath."

Teacher: "Do you feel better when your bath is over?"

Child: "Yes."

Teacher: "See, we mourn for only a for a short time, and then we feel better."
Psalm 30:5 "...Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning."

Hannah's Prayer (Oct 16)

Today we read Hannah's Prayer and continued discussing the Beatitudes. We reflected on Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted and noted how God comforted Hannah and answered her prayer to have a baby.

Praise and worship

Morning prayer: reciting The Lord's Prayer from memory.

Our BEES for our BEATITUDES.

The Red Sea (Oct 9)

...and they walked out on dry land.
Today we read and discussed the story about the Red Sea in the Beginner's Bible as part of our Beatitudes: "Me" Attitudes vs "Bee" Attitudes yearly theme.

After reading and discussing the story, we decided to do an activity that would make real the difference between mes vs the bees in the story.

The children help set up a make believe sea that they would each get a chance to walk through both as an ancient Israelite and as an ancient Egyptian.

We asked: What do you think the Israelites did before they began to go towards the water?

The children responded:

"I think they prayed."

"I think they were afraid."

...and so they [the kids] did. They kneeled or stood quietly, acted nervous, prayed, had faith, and then began to slowly walk into the sea but noticed that our interactive sea (powered by little hands) parted allowing them to safely walk out on dry land.

We even got to go through a second time with a little silliness singing and dancing "Pharoah, Pharoah" which has the important lyrics "Listen to God if you won't listen to me."

Then we learned the difference between the Egyptians' "Me" Attitudes vs the Israelites' "Bee" Attitudes when the kids walked through again, this time as the Egyptians in the story we read...and noticed that the sea did not part and therefore they got wet! (sea water powered by their teachers splashing water on they as they ran through screaming, giggling and not listening after previously being giving permission to demonstrate some inappropriate Me attitudes].

Communion Sunday Oct 2 Recap

We read The Last Supper in The Beginner's Bible (something we will do every first Sunday) and spoke about communion.

We did a quick attitude check, and listed things that exemplified good (bee) attitudes vs bad or not so good (me) attitudes.

Checking our behaviors and attitude are things everyone in the church does (or should do) before receiving communion. We will do an attitude check-in every first Sunday, too.

Some sample quotes from the kids:

Bad attitudes
  • Slinging your brother
  • Hitting
  • Not listening
  • Not going to bed

Good attitudes
  • Listening to your parents
  • Being nice
  • Giving hugs when someone is sad
  • Keeping personal space
  • Being gentle with a baby
Then the children went into the main sanctuary and got to participate in their own offering (using the Children's Ministry's offering treasure box) then watched or participated in communion before returning to the Fellowship Hall for dismissal.

Sunday, September 25 Recap

Our second Sunday of the year was a great success. The students were once again well behaved, and as the team has become organized, the kids are getting used to our new weekly routine.

As the children arrive at 9:30 they color in their own personal coloring books, and play together. It is a wonderful time of fellowship for them.
One of the things we begin with is the Lord's Prayer. It is our hope that every child growing up at Bethel will know this part of scripture.
The children are learning about and experiencing worship as well as getting ready to lead the adults in worship at the end of October.
If your family has not received the very important worship packet for the entire year, be sure to see Jessica Huber, or one of the front children's helpers at the table to get one.
We are asking for a practice commitment from every family.

We also want to be sure that your family has filled our your child's information form, and that you have signed the parent covenant. These are very important elements this year to unifying our ministry, and keeping you involved with your child's spiritual growth. Once again, if you have not done either of these things then please see a greeter/helper at the table in front of the fellowship hall.
This week we began our year long study of The Beatitudes. We had an overview this week and we will dive in deeper all year long.

Sunday, September 18th: First Day Back!

This past week was a wonderful first week back at Children's Ministry here at Bethel. The children were very well behaved this week!
We learned about the Lord's Prayer, and what it means to us when we pray it.
We learned what our new weekly routine will be at Children's Worship. Just as a reminder, we now begin at 9:30 every week, and we will be meeting even on Communion (1st) Sundays.
We worshiped together. Rehearsal for King's Kidz will begin next week. Worship packets were passed out. If you didn't receive one, be sure to grab one this week. It has all the practice and worship materials for the year in it.
Our theme for the year is is The Beatitudes. The children began work on their coloring books, which they will receive at the end of the year.

Remembering the FRUIT of the Spirit

NUTRITION AT BETHEL

As lent comes to a close it's important that we reflect. In March we spoke about the fruit of the spirit. As a church community we often speak about nurturing the spirit. It is not only important that we nurture the spirit, but that we also nurture the body. In the 40 days of lent, we usually focus on giving up something of the body....so we can nurture the spirit. The spirit AND body are important. In the way that we teach our children to cultivate the spirit, is important that we teach them to care for their bodies. As we approach the Easter season let's start thinking about ways in which we can nurture the body.

Let's start with FRUIT....

It's delicious and nutritious. Fresh FRUIT can be a great snack. Fruit is stocked with key nutrients like water, fiber and various micronutrints Vitamins A-K, minerals and phytochemicals which have antioxidant properties.

It's important to start healthy eating early. People tend to carry their eating habits with them throughout life. So get your child started with a healthy eating lifestyle by starting with FRUIT.

Tips-How to encourage young children to snack with FRUIT:

Model it- children model their parents. Even when you think their not looking - they are! So instead of reaching for that bag of potato chips before dinner, grab a piece of FRUIT. They're likely to catch on.

FRUIT of the month

Bananas- Rich in fiber and potassium bananas are a great fruit. Available year round. Bananas are a great snack FRUIT. They can also be added to any fresh fruit smoothie to provide a creamier texture. This month, when your craving a snack try grabbing a banana.

Victory Chant Lyrics

Hello everyone! Here are the lyrics to the song Victory Chant that the children will be singing on Easter Sunday. Please have them learn this the best they can. The soloist will sing each one of these lines and the children will repeat.

Here's an example! Donnie McClurkin... Have them practice with this.

Victory Chant

Hail Jesus! You're my King!
Your life frees me to sing
I will praise You all my days
You're perfect in all Your ways

Hail Jesus! You're my Lord!

I will obey Your word
Because I want to see
Your kingdom come
Not my will by Yours be done

Glory, glory to the Lamb!

You will take us into the land
We will conquer in Your name
And proclaim that "Jesus reigns!"

Hail, hail Lion of Judah!

How wonderful You are!
Hail, hail Lion of Judah!
How powerful You are!

Hail Jesus! You're my King!

Your life frees me to sing
I will praise You all my days
You're perfect in all Your ways

Glory, glory to the Lamb!

You will take us into the land
We will conquer in Your name
And proclaim that "Jesus reigns!

Hail, hail Lion of Judah!

How wonderful You are!
Hail, hail Lion of Judah!
How powerful You are!

He's the Lion in the tribe of Judah

He's the root and the Offspring of David
He's the Lily of the Valley
He's the Bright and the Morning Star

Hail, hail Lion of Judah!

How wonderful You are!
Hail, hail Lion of Judah!
How powerful You are!

The Lion of Judah shall break every chain

and give to us, oh my,
the victory again and again
The Lion of Judah
shall break every chain and give to us,
the victory again and again

Also, we will be doing the Bethel Chant again, so the children could probably use an at home refresher! That is on the CD and the lyrics are on This Post as well as the video.

Sunday, March 13th

This past Sunday the children started learning about the fruit of the spirit goodness which is represented by a pear. We sang about goodness and worship. At the end of children's church, some children received badges called 'caught being good' and named an instance that day where they displayed goodness. It was a very tangible way for them to understand goodness.

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life."
Psalm 23:6

This week King's Kids started rehearsing for Easter Sunday. They will be singing Victory Chant (Hail Jesus). Here is a video that they can practice with. The children will repeat and sing after the soloist just like the choir in the video.

Who are we? I'm a Bethelite!

The King's Kidz premiered their new BETHEL CHANT, written by Bethel's own Kim Willingham.

The purpose?
Each year we evaluate what the children have learned. Do they know who Jesus is? Do they know how to model Christian behavior? Are they good stewards of the church? What is Christmas and Easter? This year, we also wanted to be sure that the kids in the Children's Ministry new basic things about our church, like:
  • The name of their church -- Bethel AME Church, founded in 1988
  • Their pastors' names -- Ray Hammond and Gloria White-Hammond
  • The name of their denomination -- African Methodist Episcopal
  • Church history -- Mother Bethel AME Church in Philadelphia, PA, founded in 1794
  • The founder -- Richard Allen, who was born enslaved, taught himself to read and write, started a church and changed our world.
That's a lot for three to seven year olds!

The result:

The children practice each Sunday during children's worship under the tutelage of Jessica Huber, our Children's Music Director, and also at home with their parents (see little James giving an example).

Recap of Sunday, February 20th

Just a quick recap from last week, February 20th. We had a great time as we heard a Bible story from Pastor Gloria, worshiped, and continued to study our February fruit of the spirit: Kindness.

Below are some photos from last week. We also had some special guests who shared some informative Black History Month chants with the children. We learned about Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Barak Obama, and a few others!

Remember! This week (tomorrow) we will be singing our special Black History Month chant in the main service all about the history of our church and the history of the A.M.E. tradition. You can find the lyrics below on this page. Please go over these with your child before they come and we'll be pulling them out for a quick rehearsal before they go on.

See you tomorrow! Blessings

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Hello again parents and friends!
Today was a great day at Bethel Children's ministry.
We had a small group today, but it was great nonetheless. We started talking about the fruit of the spirit kindness for the month of February. The actual fruit for this month is the strawberry.

The children drew beautiful pictures of what kindness looks like to them.

We continued to practice our Bethel Chant that will be sung in the sanctuary in 2 weeks. Each child was given a cd which has this chant as well as other worship music on it. Please help your child learn this chant from memory! The lyrics are also typed out on this blog.

Today was the debut of the brand new name tags which feature every child's photo.

Have a blessed week and we look forward to seeing your child in children's church next Sunday!

Sunday, January 30, 2011

We continued with our discussion about what it means to be patient. Simone read Daniel and the Lions. We talked about how Daniel was patient and obedient to God. Because of his patience, he was not thrown into the lion's den.
To show that we are working on being patient, we made butter which was part of our yummy treat!! The children enjoyed shaking their jars and were amazed that cream turned into butter. It's was also a wonderful way to work off their energetic bodies. Their task was to share their butter with their family if it made it home.
Jessica continued to rehearse the Bethel chant with the children. Please practice this at home with them as they will perform this on Sunday, February 27.
The Fruit of the Spirit for the month of February is kindness along with fun strawberry treats!

Sunday, January 23, 2011

On our first week back since the Christmas break, we dove right into our new fruit of the spirit which is patience. During praise and worship time, we sang a song about Herbert the Snail who taught us to have patience.

We read the story of the fiery furnace when God protected his children from the fire. We talked about how God can save and protect us, and we should be patient for him as well as with the people around us.

Our fruit this month is the pineapple which represents patience.

The children began learning this chant which they will say in church on February 27. We need your help to help them learn it at home! Here are the words.

Bethel AME Children's Worship Chant
Adult: Who are we?

For the activity the children drew pictures of what patience meant to them.

We had an appropriate snack of pineapple slices to finish it off.

Please remember to help your child learn the chant and bring an offering every week of money, canned goods, or hats and scarves for needy children.

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
Galations 5:22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control...."

Lyrics from the chorus of the song PATIENCE (Herbert the snail):
Have patience, have patience
Don't be in such a hurry
When you get impatient, you only start to worry
Remember, remember that God is patient, too
And think of all the times when others have to wait for you
